Quickie Review - Nail Envy Nail Strengthener by OPI

I'm ready to toss my Nail Envy Nail Strengthener by OPI in the recycling bin. It's almost 2/3rds empty but it's gone all gloopy. When I first purchased it I told you that I'd report back. Well, I'm ready to report back.

I purchased this last fall (info here). At this point I had used it a bit and knew how I felt about it. The original price was $17.99 but I couponed and discounted and ended up paying $6 for it.

It's not the magical base coat that I wanted it to be. It was nice but it doesn't do anything special. If you are like me then you think that it's not worth the price. I mean I'd like a great nail base but at $18, I'm not willing to pay that amount if it doesn't do magical things.

My favorite top coat, Sally Hansen Insta-Dri, is at most $7.49. I can normally get it for about $3 or $4 with coupons and discounts. It IS magical. I live for that stuff. I will not paint my nails without it. I take my nail color AND that top coat to the nail salon for pedicures. And, at highest price it's $7.49. That being the case, I don't think my base coat should be much higher than that.

I'm still playing with new base coats. It does take a long time to find one that you love. This bottle of OPI has lasted almost a full year. So, one would say that it was worth the price then.

Let's look at it this way. 

My most recent base coat purchase was Revlon Treat and Boost $3.49. Full price it's $6.28. Using it almost every week, that's twelve cents per use! If a twelve cent nail base is as good as a (do the math) thirty five cents nail base, which one do you choose? I go with the cheaper one if all things are equal.

I have nothing against OPI treatments. I'm sure they are lovely. And, if I were to find this discounted for five bucks, I'd pick it up. But if my Revlon Treat and Boost or some other nail base was on sale next to it...

...it would be a hard choice to make. And, I'm not sure the OPI Nail Envy Nail Strengthener would win.

Quickie Review - Yes To Carrots Nourishing Gentle Cleansing Wipes

I picked up these Yes To Carrots Nourishing Gentle Cleansing Wipes and had semi high hopes for them. I always have to be careful with the Yes To line. I have some food allergies and while I don't think these are dipped in carrots, I still have to be careful.

But, I'm not allergic to carrots so one would think this should be ok.

I tried them a few times last week and everything was fine. I wasn't in love with the wipes because I just didn't feel that they took off my makeup well. I also felt that there was a residue of some sort on my face. I picked up a 10 count pack so I was just going to go through it and move on.

This past weekend I wore quite a bit of makeup and needed more that just 1 wipe. It took 2 wipes to get all of the makeup off. I was ready to use my toner and then I felt the tingle.

It didn't burn. My face didn't turn red but it tingled and felt uncomfortable. I've learned over the years that the tingle is my sensor. When I feel the tingle it's time to get that shiz-nit off your face. The next step is burn and red.

I did a quick wipe off with a gentle cleanser and my face felt better after a few minutes. I didn't use toner just some of my most gentle moisturizer and went to bed. The next morning my face was fine but I still babied it. Luckily I didn't have to work because if I did, I wouldn't have worn any makeup. I would have just let my face rest.

So no. I won't try any more Yes To products. I've tried others and obviously fruit essence is not a fan of my face (or my face is not a fan of it). I wish I could use them because I hear great things about them. My face says no.

And I have to listen to my face.

Quickie Review - Goody Skinny Bobby Pins

Not sure if this is a quickie review or a rant! I thought that I did a good thing by purchasing these Goody Skinny Bobby Pins. I thought that they would work super well at creating perfect updos for my hair.

I was wrong.

I have baby hairs at the back of my hair and I have a side bang that is subject to curl fall-age. When I put my hair in a ponytail, we sometimes have runaway hair pieces. When I curl my hair on humid days, we have hair fall-age. I make sure that I have bobby pins to take care of those areas. I'm currently using brown regular bobby pins and brown small bobby pins. Neither works that well. The regular ones are sometimes too thick and totally visible to others and the short ones snag and pull my hair. These skinny ones looked to be a life saver.

They are a great idea, in theory (wait...is that the same thing?). They are thin so you can supposedly swoop up some hair and then hide the bobby pin. The reality is that they are so thin, they bend and twist and they get snagged in your hair. Because the bend, you can't put them all the way in your hair.

These ended up sitting in the bathroom with all the other misfit hair toys. If I had an island to send them to, I would.

Have you tried these? Do you want to? Why don't you just send me your money instead.

It's a wiser investment.

Quickie Review - H2O Hand and Cuticle Scrub

My favorite foot lotion is the H2O Targeted Foot Care. I know, I've mentioned that like 5 million times before. When I tried it and fell in love, I began trying all of the H2O products. One of the products that I tried right after the foot care lotion was the H2O Hand and Cuticle Scrub.

One of the lovely YouTube ladies that I watch recommended this hand scrub as a apart of her manicure routine. Her nails looked healthy and I wanted to see if this would help me. I managed to snag it for $5.99 at T.J.Maxx so not a bad deal at all. I get all of my H2O products at T.J.Maxx or Marshalls.

The product is a thick scrub. The ingredients include pumice sand, jojoba and coconut powder. The plan is that they will gently buff away dull, dry skin. I have to admit that it does slough away dead skin and your hands look brighter and feel softer. The granules are small and not harsh and they smell ok. I mean, they smell like mud but it doesn't stink.

Your hands feel so soft for hours afterwards. I keep rubbing my hands together and feeling just how soft they are. My original thought was that the H2O Hand and Cuticle Scrub was just okay but didn't really do anything. But, that's not true. This is the perfect scrub for the end of the day before you slather lotion on your hands. And, it's also the perfect scrub for your feet too! Before you get out of the tub you can do a once over on your feet and then slather lotion on your feet.

If you haven't tried H2O products, I recommend you start with the foot care creme. I love it. The second product you should try is this hand and cuticle scrub. Your soft, silky hands will thank you.

Quickie Review - Trader Joe's Micellar Cleanser & Makeup Remover

I've been falling in love with Trader Joe's and everything within its walls. The kiddo and I have been gracing the store with our presence and enjoying the Trader Joe's experience. If you haven't walked through a Trader Joe's grocery store, you need to find one and just walk through. Even if you don't make a purchase (but you will) you need to walk through and see what's going on.  It is a really fantastic grocery shopping experience. The Trader Joe's is about 3 miles from my house so the kiddo and I are all about that TJ life. We are living the high life up in there!

Anywho, while waiting for the kiddo to grab two bags of chips (don't judge me), I looked at the cosmetics and health & beauty products. I came across this pack of Trader Joe's Micellar Cleanser & Makeup Remover ($3.99 / 20 wipes). No, I don't need any new makeup remover wipes and after my last makeup wipe trial you would think I'd run from anything new. But, I saw these and really wanted to try them.

I don't see any super duper claims of greatness for these wipes, other than they are Trader Joe's brand. The back of the package suggests that you use them twice a day to "gently to draw impurities and traces of makeup". It's mild and gentle and it doesn't have "aggressive surfactants, alcohol, parabens, colorants or allergens".

First of all, the wipes are pretty big. I like a wipe that is a good size. It's also thick. It doesn't tear as you use it. That is nice. But, it didn't do anything special. It removed makeup but I did have to use 2 of them when I had a heavy makeup day (heavy concealer).

And that's about it. It was just ok. The price was fine. The size was fine. The smell was basic, nothing harsh or over bearing. I mean, that's not bad but it isn't special. I prefer my Wet n Wild wipes instead.

Do I regret trying them? No, cause it's not bad and I'm sure I'll be okay finishing these up. Will I buy them again. Nope.

I honestly can't see any reason to.

Quickie Review - Rimmel London Keep Calm Lip Balm

Maybe a week ago I picked up one of the Rimmel London Keep Calm Lip Balms (link here). I was hoping that it would be one of the best things I'd tried on my lips because I love the rest of their lip products. I bought and opened my lip balm a week ago but only told you about them a few days ago. It seems like I haven't had time to give it a good test run but trust me, I've revved it up to 100 mph and given her a turn around some corners.

Well, I like her but I probably won't use her that much.

Now, I don't hate her. Don't think that for one single moment. I just don't love her. First and foremost, she smells like oddly scented petroleum. I mean she really smells funny. I can't put my finger on what the smell is but it's something that I don't particularly care for.

Secondly, she's kinda bland. I know that I got the crystal clear one and how can crystal clear be anything but bland but I have other clear balms (and I won't name them here) that have a little something. Some of them smell like different foods. Some of them have color to the product but no tint to color your lips. Some of them are super moisturizing and long lasting. Well, this one was none of those things. I mean it was a little bit of all of those things but not much of any of them (if that makes sense).

Yes, it's moisturizing and it lasts quite a while. After a half hour or so, the weird smell goes away. If you can wait that long, you will be okay with that.

It doesn't offer long lasting lip benefits. If I pop some on at night and wear it to bed, I don't see results the next morning. That doesn't make a great lip balm for me.

Overall, it isn't a bad product, it just isn't a great product. I have a ton of lip balms and this one doesn't stand out over the rest. I wanted it to but it just didn't.

I had originally planned to grab a few of the tinted ones and give them a test run but I think I'll pass. This one was trial enough.

And it just didn't make the cut.

Quickie Review - Buxom Full-on Lip Cream in Dolly

I love Buxom lippies. They have just enough color, they tingle a little bit, they smell really good, they have the cutest names and I have yet to meet a bad color. I picked up the Full-on Lip Cream in Dolly. I wanted the limited edition one but that one has shimmer. I'm kinda over the shimmer lip gloss/creams.

The tingle doesn't bother me. I know that some folks get weirded out by it but it's the same as Carmex to me. No big deal. It's kinda that thing about if it's tingling, I know that it's working. Now, I don't need plumper lips or anything but I do feel that when I wear them I tend to poke my lips out a bit more. So, I guess I end up with plumper lips.

The color isn't super amazing but it is wonderful. It's a sheer light brown sugar color. I normally use Buxoms over lipsticks to help with the staying power. I don't mind using them on their own but the give so-so lipsticks that extra zing.

Buxom lip glosses are just a tiny big sticky (but not uncomfortably so) and they last for several hours (with me eating and drinking). I think that's really the appeal to me. I know that when I but a Buxom lipgloss on, it's staying.

I enjoy this new color. I have several mini's (because that's when I rack up) and just a handful of full sizes but love all of them. If you are new to Buxom, this might be the color to try out first. It gives a hint of color and allows you to feel the tingle.

Quickie Review - City Color face set

I was roaming the aisles at Ross again and came across this City Color set. It had a Matte Bronzer, Bronzing Stick and Shimmer Highlight. They looked great and I am all about bronzers and highlighters. For $5.99 I was stoked. But, that feeling was short lived.

I got the kit home and did some swatchy swatches and to my horror, the colors did nothing for me (or anyone really). The Matte Bronzer didn't show up at all. Not. At. All. The Shimmer Highlight is just this side of chalk. The Bronzing Stick probably could have been salvaged but after dealing with everything else, I wasn't feeling it.

I didn't try to use the bronzer but I tried to use the Shimmer highlight and Bronzing Stick. The highlight looked like I put flour on my face. No shimmer at all. The Bronzing Stick took too much effort to blend out. It also was oily. Weird.

I was sad because I really wanted to love these products. I have seen these products reviewed over and over and folks seem to like them. Well, I didn't and I have no plans on trying to make these work.

So, I'm going to make another run to Ross to take it back. Yeah, I'll probably pick up something in its place.

Quickie Review - Bite Beauty Butter Cream Lipstick - Rosewood

So, I've done it again. I've purchased from a tried and true brand only to have it let me down. Sighhhhh.

I love Bite Beauty lipsticks. I have quite a few in rotation. They are moist and make my lips feel so good. I have to wear the barest hint of lip balm under them and the color stays for quite a long time. Most lipsticks stay about 3 - 4 hours on me. That's my barometer. Bite Beauty Lipsticks last a complete 4 hours, even as I sip coffee in the morning.

Last week I purchased one of the new Bite Beauty Butter Cream lipsticks in Rosewood. I was hoping that it would be a moisturizing, creamy lipstick like the name implies. I had heard reviews that said it did so I thought success was inevitable.

This Bite Beauty Butter Cream lipstick was a big, fat fail. The color was supposed to be a rich mauve color with a gorgeous shade of pink shining through. And it was...for about 10 minutes. Then it changed into this muddy, yukky brown color. Not even a pretty brown. Just ugly.

And, it's so far from moist I don't know what to do. I put on a thick layer of lip balm and then Rosewood and my lips were instantly dry. I had to put lip balm OVER my lipstick. It wasn't comfortable. About 2 hours later I felt that I needed to wipe it off and start over.

At $28, I was hoping for better. I tried it twice and decided that it wasn't worth it. It goes back to Sephora.

Have no fear. I already have my eye on a replacement. Let's keep those fingers crossed!

Quickie Re-Review - Exfoliating Gloves

About this time last year I decide to try using exfoliating gloves to do a body exfoliation once a week or so. I saw it on a YouTube channel and they kept talking about the benefits of exfoliating your entire body. I totally bought into it.

You know what? After 3 times, my skin began to feel raw. After the 4th time (several weeks later) I gave up. I didn't want to do it anymore because my skin felt all tingly and not in the good way.

So my dilemma was that I had already purchased several of the exfoliating gloves. They were only about $1.99 at Wal-mart. For a few months I didn't touch the gloves. Then I had to use a hair removal cream on my legs.  The problem for me always comes when it's time to wipe that stuff off. If you are like me, you don't like the feel of that crap and you don't want to mess up a good bath towel. I was in a pinch though so you know what I used? An exfoliating glove.

Wow! Yes, it removed the hair removal cream and you know how you always have 4 stray hairs that don't get removed? The exfoliating glove removed those 3 of those hairs. I only had 1 stray hair! I call that a win. Then, I lathered the glove with some bath wash and re-washed my legs, exfoliating as I went.

I normally get a good 4 or 5 days before the first hairs pop up and it's time to redo the job (or you just ignore it until you have to wear a dress or shorts). You know what? This time it was a little over a full week. Yep! 8 days! That's pretty spectacular.

I like being able to recycle things instead of toss them. I also like smooth legs. I'm getting the best of both worlds! The exfoliating glove isn't doing the thing that I bought it for but it sure is doing a heck of a job serving its new purpose.

I probably won't buy them from Wal-Mart again because they've gone up to about $2.99 or so now BUT Dollar Tree carries them and I think I might buy one from there and try it out.

Quickie Review - Urban Decay Glide-On Lip Pencil

On Black Friday I picked up Urban Decay Full Frontal Lipstick Stash set and in that little set was a Urban Decay Glide-On lip pencil in Ozone. Ozone is a clear lip liner that is meant for holding "color in place and prevents feathering".

So many people are talking about how fantastic this is. It prevents feathering and color stays in place. Honestly, I don't see it. My lips don't feather anyway so that wasn't a problem but when you say it holds color in place, I feel like it's a lip primer. That is not a trait that I see.

I tried it with light colored lipsticks and dark lipsticks. I tried it with a number of lip glosses. I don't see the longevity and I don't get feathering so I didn't see that.

The quick review is it's not worth the hype at all.

Quickie Review - Zoya Nail Polish Remover

Here it is folks. I've been talking about a special new nail product for a while now and tada!! I purchased the Zoya Remove Plus Big Flipper Polish Remover (8 oz $9.99 at Ulta).

The Zoya website says that Zoya Remove Plus is a "gentle...nail polish remover, nail prep and nail conditioner". I've heard many positive things about it. I decided I definitely needed to try it out. So, I ran into my local Ulta, used a $3.50 off coupon (at the same time that I purchased a deeply discounted Zoya nail polish) and walked out with this bad boy.

I've used it three times now and so far...I really like it! It doesn't seem harsh on my nails (you know, like some of the other brands). It certainly doesn't smell harsh. It doesn't dry out my nails and it removes every last remnant of polish. It doesn't leave a white film on my nails when I'm done.

I love the bottle style. It's so nice for easy dispensing. You can't spill anything from this (I think). That is a big plus in my book.

I know that so many people don't like the price but when you think about all the things that you do spend money on, all the cash you shell out for pretty polishes and special hand lotions and creams, you begin to realize that your hands are worth it. I've had such a problem with peeling nails, I was willing to try this. So far it has worked like a dream. Stay tuned for my empties and see what I think when I finish the bottle.

That may take a few months so...

Quickie Review - Black Radiance True Complexion Soft Focus Finishing Powder

I have mentioned before that Black Radiance often gets overlooked in the drugstore store. They are normally in smaller displays, nestled in between 2 larger brands. Or, they sit off to the side and don't catch your eye as you turn the corner of the aisle. I saw this beauty at my local RiteAid for $6.99 with a $1 off coupon ($5.99) only because I was looking at nail polish next to it. It's the Black Radiance True Complexion Soft Focus Finishing Powder. It is huge so it definitely stood out.

The packaging is a bit cheapy cheap but I love the feel of it! It's big and round and all the warm tones blend in together. There appeared to be 3 different shades in the store but I only found 2 of these in Golden Almond Finish. Score, because it looked like my shade.

I shouldn't have been surprised when I tried this and fell in love with it. If I can find Black Radiance in my shade, I normally like it. This is certainly no different. The powder is so soft, it's almost creamy. It blends in like a dream and has no smell at all! The back of the package states that it is lightweight with a silky texture. So true. Because this powder isn't heavy, I can also use this as a blotting powder after work if I have some other place to go.

There is a lot of powder in this container, so it's very cost effective. This is one of the best finishing powders that I've found. I'm very happy that I stumbled upon it.

Quickie Review - e.l.f. Lipsticks

Yeppers, I'm still talking about the things I purchased from e.l.f. In my defense, it was a lot of stuff for under $35! When you have that much stuff to try out, it takes a while.

I purchased 3 lipsticks from e.l.f.; 2 Mineral Lipsticks ($5 on sale for $3.75, Barely Bitten and Rich Raspberry) and 1 Moisturizing Lipstick ($3 on sale for $2.25, Rosy-Go-Round). I've purchased e.l.f. lipsticks before and picked the wrong colors. This time I did quite a bit more research on the web before pulling the trigger.

All of the colors are great. The top color, Barely Bitten, is a reddish brown that works well for fall and winter. It's warm and is a lip liner accentuater. No matter what lip liner I wear, this color makes it better.

The middle one, Rich Raspberry, has to be my favorite. It's a rich berry color that goes so well with my skin tone. It's sweet and I can use this as a year round color.

The bottom color, Rosy-Go-Round, is a berry color too, maybe strawberry. It's a nice red as well but it comes off a bit redder than I want so I add a light brown lip gloss over the top.

Even though these tout lip moisturizing properties, I'm not sure that I'd agree. They are nice on the lips, as long as you wear a lip balm underneath. If you don't, you will have some seriously hurt feelings. Even so, they aren't bad and I don't mind wearing them.

If you are thinking about getting these lipsticks, I'd say go for it! Wear a lip balm and choose your colors carefully. Don't look at the e.l.f website. Go to the internet and see what other people say about the colors. Look at internet swatches and go from there.

If you do that, you'll enjoy these lippies just as much as I do!

Quickie Review - e.l.f. Essential Long-Wear Lipliner Pencil

It's amazing. I just ranted about how the tiny $5 Sephora lip liners were horrible and tugged on my lips and then the next day I pick up my $1 e.l.f. Essential Long-Wear Lipliner Pencils and they work like a dream. 

Yes ma'am. The two cheapo, reapo e.l.f. lip liners wore so beautifully! I purchased Bark and Bitter during my big e.l.f. haul, just hoping they'd be okay. Little did I know that they would be fantastic!

They are soft and glide on so easily. The colors are very pigmented and they stay where you put them. No, they don't last all day but I get several hours wear in. I was pretty impressed. 

I can also get away with filling my lips in with both of these and then just adding a balm for gloss. I like when my lip liner can double as a lipstick. When it's a $1 lip liner that's even better!!

In the $1 line there are only 4 colors total. The two that I am missing are Natural Blush and Mauve Luxe. You know that I won't be missing them for long and at a $1, why should I?

Have you tried these lip liners? Have you noticed an e.l.f. trend in my cosmetics? Yep. I have been preferring the e.l.f. products over more expensive products!

If e.l.f. keeps it up, I won't ever make Sephora VIB Rouge!

Quickie Review - Sephora Lip Liners

I really expected more on ALL levels. I can't begin this post any other way. I love Sephora lipsticks and liquid lipsticks and lip glosses. My Sephora lipsticks (Sexy Game and Oh Oh!) are so moisturizing and such beautiful colors. I wear them any chance I get. I also wear my liquid lipstick in Fig. It's a tad bit drier but it's a liquid lipstick so I kind of expect it. I just lip balm it up and everything is fine.

So, when I saw these 2 lip liners by Sephora, it was a no brainer. They would probably be just as great. I ordered them and clapped my hands with glee when they arrived (Yes, I did. Don't judge me!).

I tried them both once and then I tried them both again. I wanted to make sure that user error had nothing to do with how bad these are. They are not moist in the least bit. They are dry and tug horribly at my lips. I can't remember the last time I had a lip liner that did that. And, they don't last. I put the deeper of the two, Royal Rose, on my lips and it was gone by the time I walked to the car and hopped in. I can't even see Native Nude on my lips. It doesn't matter though because it disappeared even sooner.

And they are tiny! They are almost 3" long! I'm use to liners twice that size for the price. I try to make some things work but these two lip liners are going back. I paid $5 each for them! That just isn't a deal anyway you look at it.

Quickie Review - Milani Illuminating Face Powder

Last year during the Black Friday sales, I tried out some products that I couldn't find in stores. Two of those items were the Illuminating Face Powders (Amber Nectar and Hermosa Rose) by Milani. I had seen them on other people's blogs and YouTube channels but I never could find them in my local stores. Then, Milani has their Black Friday sale and I seized my opportunity.

Over all, I like Milani's products. They are reasonably priced and a good quality. These two products definitely fall into that category. These illuminating powders normally cost $9.99 apiece. I of course, got them for half price so 2 of these babies for $9.99 is a great deal. I've heard other people complain about how cheap the containers are but I like them. I think they look sleek for a drugstore product. I've never been ashamed to pull them out or display them. And, you get a good bit of product in them fir the price. The containers have .35 oz of product. Laura Mercier has an illuminating powder with the same amount of product for $38 (Side bar - the Laura Mercier powder has hints of the same color spectrum as these. Is Milani a dupe? Not sure, you tell me).

I like the powders. There isn't a ton of sparkle and the colors meld together beautifully. Amber Nectar is a warm brown peach and Hermosa Rose is a brown with the slightest hint of pink. They both do have slight illuminating qualities but I wouldn't call these highlighters at all. For me, they are winter time bronzers. They give a rich, natural glow to my skin that warms me up and doesn't make me look over done. For someone lighter than me (NC42), these could be regular bronzers (with sheen). For someone darker, mehhh, not sure that they would work.

I like these and will continue to use them for a warm glow, until I get my summer tan. Then I'll have to put these away. Would I buy them again? The color is really natural and doesn't make me look all made up. At full price, probably not. For $5, maybe. I have to think about it. Do I recommend these? As highlighters, no. As warm bronzers, yes.

Quickie Review - H2O Softening Mint Foot Rub

I take foot care seriously (when it's time to whip out the sandals). For years I used Aveda's foot care relief. I loved the peppermint smell and the way it healed my feet after just a few days. My only problem is that it has gotten sooooo expensive. 4.2 fl oz is $24. I really love this but man! That price is just too much for a foot cream. I was certain that I could find something that was equal for a better price. I was bound and determined to find a new foot cream.

Hold on to your seats girlies! I found one!! One of my YouTube lovelies talked about the H2O hand and nail scrub and how fantabulous it was for your hand and nails. So, I went to T.J. Maxx in search of it. I did find that hand and nail scrub but I also found the mint foot rub by H2O.

I didn't get excited right away because I've tried many foot creams this year and after a week or two, was just very disappointed. I didn't want to jump the gun and fall in love only to get heartbroken (or foot broken in this case) again.

I waited this time. I wore it for several weeks before trusting it. We've been dating for almost two months now AND I've purchased a backup one!

Yep, H2O's Targeted Care Softening Mint Foot Rub has reached favorite status. It's not holy grail yet (we've only been dating for two months!) but it's a constant companion. I don't have jacked up feet but because hate shoes and go barefoot a lot, I feel that I always need to moisturize my feet more than normal. This does the trick!

I do have to put it on and then not walk on the floor for about 5 - 10 minutes. But, that gives me an excuse to yell for the kiddo to do stuff for me. The wait does case problems because I always feel the need to wash my hands immediately. You don't want to rub your eye with this stuff on your hands. TRUST me. Learn from my mistakes people! Other than those 2 things, there aren't any downsides!
